biography
Conway Campbell Jr. is an up-and-coming, New York City-based bassist, composer, arranger, and educator. Conway’s musical journey began in the seventh grade when he embarked upon learning the cello, swiftly transitioning to the upright bass within a year. Raised in Worcester, MA, Conway began his study under the tutelage of the Assumption College Jazz Band at the age of 14.
It was during his formative years at Holy Name Central Catholic Jr./Sr. High School (2014-2018), his passion for music flourished, igniting his dedication to composition and arranging. While in high school, Conway received scholarships to attend prestigious programs such as Meet The Master’s Jazz Camp, Berklee Global Jazz Institute Summer Camp, and Jazz in July Summer Camp Intensive. Campbell also received the esteemed Louis Armstrong Award for his exceptional contribution and leadership as president of jazz band.
Conway completed his undergraduate degree in jazz performance at the University of Hartford’s Jackie McLean Insitute, where he studied under world-renowned musician Ron Carter, Gerald Cannon, and Nat Reeves. There, he composed and arranged his first piece for big band, Neptune. A multifaceted artist, Campbells' talents resonate across diverse musical enclaves, from his membership in R&B group Mixed Company as well as his ventures with jazz fusion group SoulSpace.
As an educator, Conway’s pedagogical foundation revolves around instilling a comprehensive understanding of theory, harmony, technique, and the profound lineage of African-American Music. His instructional journey has included teaching at revered institutions such as the Litchfield Jazz Camp, BackCountry Jazz Summer Workshop, and the BackCountry Jazz After-School Workshop.
He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in jazz studies at the Manhattan School of Music, where he is studying under Buster Williams. His collaborative endeavors have allowed him to grace the stage with luminaries, including Dayna Stephens, Jeremy Pelt, Godwin Louis, Steve Davis, Joe Farnsworth, and Antoine Drye, among others. Currently gaining his way into the musical circuit of New York City, Conway performs regularly at iconic venues such as Smalls Jazz Club, The Django, The Jazz Gallery, Mezzrow, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Zinc Bar.
